Unhappy Ohh noo! Purple needs a dr! Asap!

The last few times I have driven my grocery go getter, (97 Grand Cherokee, v-8, auto, 5.2, 4x4) * like that huh* lol anyhow, he has been sick! I have noticed that while driving after a lil while and as I coast down my mtn his RPMs will go up and down, and races! But then after it seems like it goes thru a cycle of this, it stops doing this and runs just fine.... He only does this after the first run of the day only too. Doesnt matter if a/c or heater is on either. At first I thougt it was the transmission slipping but it doesnt feel right, and it stops after awhile, and only during the first morning run. IS THE A JEEP DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?!

My dad's GC has had about every issue out there, but the part that is throwing my off is that it is only messing up on the first run of the day. I would think if it is revving up and bogging down, and I think it said you coast down a mtn, it would be something...

Is it automatic or standard, and if standard, are you in neutral or just holding your clutch in? If auto, could it be that the speed you are going is just right at the ****ing point of two differant gears? I have had that issue before, but again you say it only happens on your first run... that really throws a lot of things out the window, as most would be an all the time type symptom.

Let us know if it is auto or manual...

Its an automatic, and its not just while going down the mtn, I at first thought that might have been something... But other morning I was driving back home on a freeway and after about 10 minutes like always it started to do this again, it did this for about oh Im gonna say , 20+ miles just surging, the rpms would rev up but no real speed would happen I could feel the rpms, was going about 70. I at one point even video'd it doing this and the rpms went to 3000, that made me nervouse and I got off the freeway shut it off and started it up and drove again and it did it a few more times. But that was it, nothing else after that.

No new leaks of any kind? This definitely sounds like a transmission issue but I'm fairly new to Jeep so can't say what... hopefully just a vacuum line or something easy. Someone will chime in with experience and advice. Best of luck figuring it out.

when the rpms change could it be down shifting then up shifting, like over drive kicking in and out? have you checked for codes yet i think theres a trans temp sensor on these that can affect shifting ...

Is that like if my check engine light comes on? Or should I have the system ran?

have you checked the transmission fluid for level, color and smell?
Years ago I have a Cutlass do about the same thing. After changing the fluid
and filter (fluid - burnt and filter - clogged) never had any more problems
with it.

It doesnt feel like slipping, its weird because it doesnt do it all the time only first run of the day so far. At least thats the most noticable. Its almost like it will loose power then get it back kinda thing is best way to describe it, no jerking, no tranny slipping, no noise.

Now this I did do, and had to add a quart, it does have a leak but this is the first time I have ever had to add fluid, I check that often.

Still got that video? Might help with diagnosing your problem. If the engine is revving but the increased RPMs don't result in increased forward momentum... something is slipping.
