Ok so i lost my license for one year due to speeding and now i got it back..went to start my jeep today and its squealing like a pig in a ***** house...at first some of the pulleys were moving and some werent..but not the only pully turing in the engine pully and the belt goes no where..i have managed to turn a couple of the pullys by hand...but how do i remove the belt so i can check them all? i cant seem to find the tensenior
I'd suggest just cutting off the old belt and getting a new one. Chances are its dry rotted and cracked, and if you've been running the truck with seized pullies, the belt is already chewed up a bit.
Not to mention belts are cheap, in all reality.
On both my 4.0's its 2 bolts. One to lock the manual tensioner in place, one to adjust.

Get a new belt either way

Not sure on the 87, but my fiance's 98 TJ Wrangler is for sure 2 bolts. I had to replace the idler pully about a month ago.
I guess I could be wrong on the Cherokee. I really haven't spent much time under it's hood, been busy with the floors and body. I swear when I looked last it was the same setup as the Wrangler.
Maybe my eyes and mind were messing with each other and I saw what I wanted to see?

I'll have to look. I'd look now but I'm still riding the bike to work every day.
I do know on the 98 TJ it was two bolts, so I'm assuming any 4.0 around that year will be the same. Its also not part of the power steering pump, if I'm not mistaken. Its listed, I believe, as an "adjustable idler pully."

For my 00 XJ it's two bolts. One on the front of the power steering pulley and one up on the bracket that it's mounted to to adjust the tension. I would take out the original belt... pay attention to how it's routed... and replace it. While in there see which pulleys and free those up while you don't have the belt in place. Hope this helps.

My last few 4.ol were from 97 - 00 and they had all the two bolt.... maybe before 97? I have never seen them with out the two bolt design. Of course I also said that XJ's were jokes when i owned my wrangler so yeah.
