the belt is still in really good shape i havent been driving with seized pullys...except for across the street into my driveway its been parked for a year which is why im guessing it seized up. But anyways it was my alternator pully that was seized i did manage to free it up but it doesnt want to spin nicey at all so im just going to replace it. i have a spare alternator from my buddies 92 xj that im gonna swap in....anyone know if a 92 alternator is the same as a 96?

Really? You sure? He can't just glue the belt back on?

So why not help him find the tensioner instead of offering no real help in this thread?

Oh, you must not know where it is, either.

My 96 4.0 has two bolts, one in the center of the idler pulley and one to adjust the tension, they both take a 15mm wrench, the flatter the better on the pulley, then a short extension or deepwell socket on the adjuster makes short work of it.

Ive got a 1993 xj, and its the same set up as you described diesel - 1 bolt in front, 2 in the back. I'll be working on my ps pump soon, so I was looking it over recently.
