That small brass plug in the flange is there to let air that is trapped in the engine out. There was a post about it on here some place. If the air can't get out you can overheat the engine after changing the thermostat. If you get a thermostat that does't have the hole, simple drill a 1/8" hole in the flange. When you install the thermostat make sure the hole is up.

The fail safe I just changed never even made it to 210 and it still locked open.

Not sure if anyone else brought this up, but im about to do my thermostat this week and get one from the dealer. when I pulled up your part, its says it works up to 96. Not sure if other people will have different numbers for later years. I have an 01 so Ill post a pic today when I get it.
