Default OEM Radio Compatibility

I have a 2000 Cherokee Classic. My radio is crapping out.

Does anyone know how compatible newer Jeep radios are to wire into the existing? Specifically, I have a guy who will sell me the OEM radio w 6-disc in dash changer out of his 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I just want to know that these are compatible. I am sure I'll need to rewire, but just need to match each wire to wire? Also, is that radio the same size? (i.e. the 1.5 bin that is in the 2000 Cherokee Classic size?)

Thanks for helping!

The radio may mount the same, but the harness is different.

I know when I was messing around with my WJ radio and nav units, there was an adapter harness avauilable to install newer units in older Jeeps, but that was WJ to ZJ. Not sure if there are WK "kits" available.

If you are good with wiring, you could probably get the connections matched up, but I am not sure if there is any type of "SAFE" or security connection built into the WK's that would be required to get the radio powered up, possibly also requiring a code of some sort.

This will not work out easily. The harness is different and the mount is different. The issue with the mount is easy enough if you are creative and make a bracket for it to mount.

The harness is not even close though. Unless he is going to cut his factory radio harness and give it to you; then you will have no cheap way to wire this to your 01 XJ. In 2007 they were using data also.

The use of Data causes a totally new problem you dot have the daa in your 01 to even cut the 2007 jeep radio on. Unfortunately Jeep decided to move to data whe they merged with mercedes and thus making it hard to integrate any electronics from new jeeps to old ones.

Hope this helps. I wouldnt try it just buy a after market radio.

I was looking to do the same thing several years ago. I wanted to swap a am/fm/cd from a Grand Cherokee into my 96 xj, so I asked my local Jeep dealer if this was a basic swap. They had never tried this swap in the dealership and were not sure it was possible since the harness was different between the vehicles and probably would cause more damage cutting the harness and trying to splice in another radio. So I never tried it myself.

Just curious... You can get a great head unit at a comparable price for far less headaches. Any reason you want to stick with a Jeep stereo?

Well not anymore. I just figured if I could get an OEM 1.5 din that was nicer than what I had, it would be nice to have it look OEM still.

but forget the hassle. I'm going with an Alpine aftermarket, and am going to put in Infinity speakers while I'm at it.

thanks all!
