Default oem radio compatibility

I'm new to XJ's and Chrysler stuff in general so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I've just acquired a 1996 Cherokee Classic but it's missing the radio. The antenna and wiring harness seem to be in place, so I'd like to put something back in there to fill the hole and give me some tunes. What year of XJ radios would be compatible with my harness? Are there any other Chrysler products that use the same radio/harness that I should look in while digging through yards?

Also if any of you have upgraded your stereos and have the original laying around, I'd be interested so let me know. I'd prefer CD, of course, but beggars can't be choosers so let me know what you've got.

I bought the cheapest Sony I could and am quite happy with it. Looks just about like a factory job

I actually have a good factory cd/tape/radio out of a 99 im not sure if it would fit, but if you took some measurements i could do the same and compare it, i would imagine the plugs would be the same because the aftermarket harness to hook up new players is for 74 and up so im guessing theyd be the same, but pics and measurements would do the trick

if interested in the stereo let me know and we could work something out

EDIT: I just did some research and this radio would only fit in a 97+ cherokee or 96-98 grand cherokee......but anyway looks like any regular xj factory radio up to 96 would fit, or if you go with aftermarket i agree with the sony, good decks!

As long as it's a plain single deck and not a double DIN or custom factory deal you should be OK. And also if the harness don't match up most factory chrysler radios have a wiring chart on top of the deck. Just snip and solder. Happy hunting

To revive an old thread...

I've got a 1999 Cherokee sport, with just a cassette stereo. I'm looking to upgrade, and was searching for any old single din deck when i stumbled on a cd stereo out of a 1999 GRAND Cherokee.

Can anyone point me to where i might be able to check the compatibility on this unit??? Not so much the wiring, as i know that can be changed easily enough, but i'd like it to fit "properly" otherwise i might as well just put an aftermarket unit in...

Anything is appreciated!

(I ran a search, but no such luck)

Pics would be a great help. I know the Xj cassete deck is a normal size, I think the GC cd deck may be larger. But pics would be the most helpful.
