Oem hitch receiver
Hey everyone, I just bought a hitch off an 89 cherokee. I know the hitch itself will fit, but the guy was nice enough to pull the wiring that came with it too, is it the same plug into the harness for my 98? Or am I going to have to buy the new wiring anyways?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I'll trade you the harness I have for that one. I grabbed the receiver out of a 98 (or so) for my 90 and the wiring will not fit mine, different plugs. It's sitting on a shelf in the garage, honestly wouldn't mind trading you.

Hopkins 42465 Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Kit on Amazon
Is that what you've got? The wiring is held in by 4 screws to the hitch on mine. They should fit in one of those flat rate boxes? Send me a pm and I'll get mine unattached and send you pictures.

Wow, thanks. Didn't realize the harness was so cheap. I appreciate the offer. Sorry I didn't get back with you yesterday, missed your reply. Can you post up a link to the harness you bought?

Has good reviews. But I think it's 97-01. I think I've noticed the earlier model ones are more spendy. Again I'm probably just going to toss the harness the hitch came with if you or someone else doesn't want it. Almost positive it's oem. It's not the flat kind either. Don't know if that makes a difference to you. But I know they make adapters, I have one for my wj.

I couldn't even find a harness on Amazon for the earlier Cherokees. Do you mind posting a picture of the harness you have from the 89? Most specifically the plugs that plug into the vehicle harness. I'd like to compare the pics to my harness to make sure it will hook up before we waste our time shipping it to me. I appreciate your help.

I'm definitely not in a hurry. Don't own a trailer yet, so trailer lights aren't a rush. I pulled the drivers rear interior panel off to look for that plug. My 90 doesn't have one like that, looks like that harness won't work for me. Thanks for the offer.

Post a pic of what you have. On mine there were 4-5 connectors for various things on a little plastic bracket inside the panel. The one on the far left, or most rearward, was for the brakes. Just unplug it and put the T adapter from Amazon in between. I just tuck the wire behind the metal bracket the spare tire sits on when not in use.

I have a harness from the later XJs with the T built into it. The later tail light harness uses different plugs to the tail lights. Not sure where to find the earlier T, was hoping it would be built into that harness you have.

Bleh. Those are some grungy connectors. Time for some CRC contact cleaner and some dielectric grease.
