It seems like such an easy job to do. Getting it out was not that bad. Now when putting the cps in (its the renix one), I didn;t feel it "set" into place anywhere like it really should in my opinion...
But I just lined it up with the bolts and screwed the bolts in... Then started the jeep. She started, but started smoking from down there along with a very loud noise.
It did seem to set in place at one point but when it was there, the bolts did not line up with the hole.
Is my CPS being eaten by the flex plate/flywheel?

I'm just marking/bumping this one. No comment!
Ok, "comments" did it start before? Did It make noise before? It was easy? What, are you ,an MFCC?
I've only done two, over 10 years apart. (same Jeep). 5-90, Laureto or Cruiser might be more familiar then I, on weather you might have a problem with the "shoulder" on that special CPS bolt.
Might be it needs the "shoulder" settled in the CPS bracket ?

The concept is easy. Take two bolts in and out with extentions and wobbling thing. Really messy and even better with two people...
Anyways, it wasn't starting before, I did the cruiser volt test (AC volts wtf?) and recieved a reading of .1, which is too weak. So I decided to replace.
Todays project is to take it out and look at the hole from above and try to find where it seats again.
I got part number css980 from napa...

That's the right #. My memory is a bit vague, but they are not normal bolts IIRC. There is a shoulder that makes the little screw nearly 3/8 where it goes through the bracket...Is all I can think of that would let it land in the wrong spot.
On your back with your feet out to the right you might hold it with your left hand and work the (11mm-7/16 sockett>3 in extension>universal>Loooong extensions to by the cross member). If your left for-arm is too big reaching past the front drive line might be an issue.

Hey thanks man, I got her running again. After poking around with my fingers for awhile I discovered that the toothed wheel was not in danger of chopping up where the sensor is. Decided to plug in and try again. Sure enough I got a noise but no smoke; then all of a sudden the noise went away and bingo it is running just fine.
Theory? Some tiny part (don't know what it would be) got dropped in there and it was getting torn up creating a sound. Smoke would come from all the wd40 I tried spraying on it to make the bolts easier to spin with my fingers. At any rate... The only confusion now is that when I do Cruiser's volt test I get no signal at all. But it is starting every time.

There is (supposed to be) a foam-lined plastic cover that sits on the bell housing at the CPS. It will often break apart while removing the CPS and can easily fall into the bell housing. I would imagine that it's not able to cause much harm unless it spun around and bonked the CPS which seems unlikely for a person with your seemingly perfect luck
Make sure your CPS cable has been secured to the firewall so that it doesn't rest on the header. That makes smoke and will quickly make it not work anymore.

88, gotta be the meter or it's leads or connections. Glad it works! On a 200 scale your house should be around 115, IIRC. (ACV, same scale, (unless you have a 2 V scale))12 something (DC), on your Jeep in the morning, 14, ish running. Depending on the meter and it's leads used, I end up seeing .2 to .6 ohm's, (on resistance), just connecting the leads.
