It's a no-go on cleaning em, just replacement. You should be able to get it out with a wrench but you can get an O2 sensor socket pretty cheep too. Make sure your wires to the sensor aren't rubbing on the exhaust or something as that will give you a faulty sensor code also.

Which O2?.....there are more than one and the code(s) will identify which one(s) are bad. Also, they have different part numbers for upstream vs downstream O2's. They are different.

There are 4 of them on the 2000/2001 cherokee. They are not the easiest to change but not the worst either. Go to autozone and rent their o2 tools - they have a set with like 3 different sockets and it will save you a lot of headache. Cheapest I found for my 01 sensors was through summitracing.com - I don't recall what I paid each but I could not find them cheaper anywhere.

also depending on what the code is it could be that something else is causing the 02 to read bad. I ended up having to change my precat (now that is fun and cheap - NOT). but what ended up being the root cause was that my ignition rail was causing cyl 5 and 6 to under fire and put too much gas into the precat which cooked the cat and caused my 02 sensor CEL codes. If I would have changed the ignition rail sooner I may have saved both the precat and my o2's.
