NV/NP231 case half differences

Default NV/NP231 case half differences

A friend's father/brother broke the rear case half of the NV231 in their 02 TJ. I think they dropped it, wasn't a driving thing. I have a couple 89/90~ NP231s around that I can tear a case half off of and give them, but they are listed as a different P/N after 96. I know the slip yoke changed to a sealed design, but I believe it can just be swapped over. I'm guessing the P/N change is not a functional difference, just a design update. Can anyone clarify if you've been able to swap the styles of slip yokes around? I'd like to help them out on this as they ordered a tcase from a wrecker and have been given the runaround. I'm not thrilled about blowing a couple hours tearing mine apart to find out it's different, as I have lots of stuff I could be doing instead.

Look and see if their's has the mounting hole for the speed sensor. I know later model NP/NV 242's don't use them and rely on a transmission output speed sensor instead. Also I believe the TJ cases use a lower low-range gearset that might need more room. IDK.

TJs use a speed sensor like the XJs. The 231s all have the same gearing. The difference will be that the TJs and 96+ XJs don't have a tailcone. I believe you can use the rear half either way. The TJ will be fine using the tailcone.

Yeah, I just want to pull his apart, discard his rear case half, put mine on, along with his tail housing/slip yoke/mass damper.

I think it should bolt up but I just don't have a confirmation from anyone that they've actually done it.
