Had no start issue with my NSS about 2 years ago, but took it apart, cleaned it up, reinstalled and has been good since. However, I just learned my reverse lights are still inop and I guess I never noticed till now. They may have not worked this entire time and I just never realized. I'm not sure. Is this a sign that my NSS is on its way out? I have 209k miles on my 1997. I'm tempted to just purchase a new one for peace of mind. I'm not really interested in disassembling the original NSS again. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Agreed. Some writeups for adjustment simply say, "set it so your reverse lights work, and it starts in neutral and park" Not much fun, but I just backed into a tree with my hatch up. That is less fun.

The best way I found to adjust the nss is to block the tires, with the jeep off turn the key to the on position and shift into reverse. Then adjust the nss till you see the lights come on. Do this at night if you are by yourself or with someone behind the jeep.

Getting it> (haven't bothered with mine). So rotate it till the lights come on, then check that it works in N & P, then snug it down.
Cbs, you would need to adjust a replacement NSS as well. In your shoes I think I'd try adjusting the installed one first. I see you cleaned yours..I haven't been there, but after all that I'd likely make sure adjustment isn't the issue!

I set mine using a mirror propped up against the garage door.

There isn't much movement in the adjustment so just try moving it. Or you can do this:

Their are at least a couple other ones out there. I've posted them but can't access those files right now. Findable searching here...maybe even add DFlintatone, I've posted them a bunch.
I think you have good info right here in this thread. The writeups sometimes don't dwell much on the adjustment, much more than has been posted here.
