Default NSS Plug issue, and yes ive used the search before i started this

im going to by pass the NSS
i have a 98 xj Sport
ive narrowed it to the NSS, i get intermittent start, i sometimes have to move the shifter between gears to start, if i let it settle in Reverse it will usually start up again or park it on a slope,

this is gonna be tricky to explain but if i separate the steps mayb that will help...

does it work to pull the wires (that you jump) coming from the nss, out of the plug,
then on the engine harness side jump them (as you normally would)
then plug the plugs together
now you have 2 loose wires coming out of the NSS, wire cap those
now in theory you will get the jumped signal and all the functions of the nss

every search i do ive never seen this in any write ive looked at, what i see it pulling the plug and jumping them and then leaving it.
im a Mechanic/Tear down tech at a salvage yard so i have a rather solid knowledge off trucks and cars but cant get a clear answer on this

PS i dont want to spend the money to get a new one, im selling the jeep for a family minded ride, but wanna get this working good,I KNOW IT WILL START IN ANY GEAR IF ITS BYPASSED)

comments? suggestions? pointing fingers with laughter?

Have you thought of trying to clean the NSS?
That's what I would do instead of bypassing it. Here's a link if you want to give it a try.

Sell the s13, and your xj will magically start correctly

If you permanently jumper it you'll get a CEL in short order. 96+ that NSS signal is fed to the PCM in addition to grounding the start relay in the PDC.
Why not just clean and reinstall it as Rtorrez mentioned?

I had it on the lift at the shop and the corrosion around the NSS is pretty bad and I'd rather not have it break and then not have my dd working, I know you can adjust them a little so I might try that, but it's been soaking in zep (like pb blast but 17$ a can and much better) for a week so it might come off good, but with this jeep if it can break it will, and being a Michigan jeep with 140k it prolly Will

Oh and the s13? It's a 91 Toyota MR2, and It's sold, and the xj has been on a steady decline since haha, it seems to know I don't have a second ride....

My cel is on from a o2 sensor so it won't make a difference, trust me I'd rather fix it right but this pita is on its. 3rd motor in less years and I'm tired of sinking my time and money In it, I miss my ZJ 242k and ran like a champ

Thanks for the link,( RTorrez) I might give that a shot and hope it works

Well, if you want to bypass it, I'd do it with a toggle switch in the cab so it doesn't tell the PCM that it's in Park while you are cruising along. Flip the switch, turn the key, flip the switch back. No harm done.

You could run a push button switch and relay right to the starter? It's what I did for the same problem and your not cutting in to any wires

Update: I got under it after work to pull the NSS and clean, I had asked a shop here in town about NSS fixes, he said loosen the 12mm bolt and tilt the NSS tward the front of the vehicle since mine won't start unless in a slope to the rear. Tighten the bolt, and see how it goes.
I did just that, when I loosend the bolt it moved forward on its own a 16th of an inch and I heard a click, not wanting to do to much with out testing it I tried starting it, reverse lights work. I drove it down the drive way and put it in park, shut it off and tried to restart (something that would end it not starting and being pushed back up the hill) it fired right up!
It won't start in neutral but I got gas and shut it off while I went inside came out and it fired up on flat ground.
I'm gonna drive it around for a few days and see If it cured it, I made a temp bypass harness so if it does decide not to work I'm not stranded,
