I have a NP424 transfer case and it is leaking fluid out the back where the rear drive shaft connects. I was told it is the rear output shaft seal. But someone else said it is the bushing and oil seal. I will post photos as well.

Also do you have a part number for it?

I'm sure there is a how to out there to fix it. If someone doesn't mind posting a link for it!

It's a pretty straight forward job. Shouldn't take more than 45 minutes start to finish.

I replaced the seal, the hardest part was removing the old one. The part cost $9.99 at autozone. It was the output shaft seal.

Good news.

 

Pry the seal from the outside if you can without damaging the aluminum tailcone. Otherwise remove the three bolts holding the cone on, tap the seal out from the inside. Instll the new seal with a socket of something the same diameter as the metal outside edge on new seal. RTV the cone back if removed.

 

I will be attempting to replace this seal soon. First I need to ID my transfer case. It looks identical to the one in your picture, leak and all. Yours is a NP242 not a NP424 like you said in the first post, right? I was going to try and replace the seal without removing the cone. Would there be any benefit to removing the cone? Is there anything under the cone that might need cleaning or inspecting? If its easier to replace the seal with the cone off, I might do it that way.

 

i always just use a seal puller and have at er.

 

that is the rear seal, you can get a seal remover tool but you can remove it with a hook tool, screw driver even a chisel. if you go the screw driver chisel method you just need to tap the sides in to make the seal it self smaller and then pry it out. this works really well on d30 pinion seals as well. the new one just tap it in with a mallad and a large socket. coat the seal with some atf before installing it. also this is a great time to lube the slip yoke splines.
