mine is a 91 with aw4 np242... and yesterday after a full day of belly scraping fun my 4wd decided to keep on going, I can switch it between part time and full time and still engage 4L but it wont go back to 2wd... well if I fiddle with it will go into 2wd for a second (but only for a second) and it will slide back to 4wd... I took alook under it and the linkage looks fine, no bends or breaks.

ps. its not just the light I can feel it at low speeds in the corners, havnt had time to jack it up yet.

 

Maybe the Linkage adjustments needs to be adjusted. You can slip or be marginally adjusted and with four wheeling, it can move things just enough to not positively engage. Clean the undercarriage, slide under, loosen the adjustment bolt and positively engage TC Im 2wd directly from the tc lever with Chanel lock pliers then tighten the adjustment bolt

 

hmm that sounds realy good... its been pouring rain today (that's what stoped me from jacking it up) but I went puddle hopping and it seemed to stay in 2wd alittle longer than it would yesterday
