NP242 J main shaft length difference (Bent)

NP242 J main shaft length difference (Bent)
Hey guys,
Bent my NP242 main shaft on my XJ and there are quite a few replacements online, however there seem to be quite a few different lengths. I've cut mine (hack n tap) so really don't know original length so unable to order a perfect match.
My question is wether those lengths really matter - my thinking is that the internal part of all NP242 J's are the same and its just extra output spline length?
Anyone have any solid knowledge on this?
