I rebuilt the transfer case (np231 amc) on my 87 cherokee 4.0 and was wondering if anyone could give me any info on the hose and filter part of this image. When I removed the tcase a hose was connected to the vent and only went to the transfer case vent tube part in the image and I cant find anything regarding a hose and filter online. Any help would be appreciated!

I don't understand what you're trying to do. What do you mean by putting a short hose over the fitting? Can you post up these pics that you mention, or post a link to them?
Wait - I think I see what you are getting at. That pic you posted shows a filter. You don't need that. You can put a hose over that tube but you'll need a vent fitting to keep the crud out of the hose.
Here's a pic of what I did - used a 5/16 coupler and a length of hose to extend up to the wire loom then attached a vent fitting, which is a front differential vent fitting. The vent next to it is the transmission vent fitting (also extended up).
You can see them near the trans dipstick.

Nope, you have to run a hose further up. Unless you do not mud or drive in dust, dirt, etc, then you may get away with that, but in my opinion you should at least have a vent fitting on it.
