My old NP231 transfer case had a leak. And when I had the break down when my starter went out they said it was pretty much dry when they looked at it. Im right now TRYING to sell parts from my parts XJ (its a 97 so there are some parts I cant use) and because I have a new NP242 that I love I dont need the NP231. So Im wondering if theres a way to tell if its bad. I do plan on taking it all apart. SO i know im going to need some gaskets and maybe RTV correct? Any good complete gasket sets i should look for?
So what are the signs that the T-case is bad? Besides bad looking gears and such? Little things I need to know about. I need to sell this to fund new stuff for the 95 So any info would be AMAZING!!!

I'm not much help BUT, sometimes when something takes that final dump, all the magic smoke gets out.....It will smell bad, burnt. The fluid won't be pretty any more. You can't rule out trouble if that's not the case, but you can suspect there is trouble it it is. D.
It shouldn't be, but I'd check the bands on the inside, your jeep should have shut off with it that low. When I blew the seal on my transfer case it cut the engine so I wouldn't burn anything up.

... I bet my starter was just old and the reason the engine didnt work is because the last of the fluid ran out. It was a VERY slow leak. Once I had it willed up it was pretty close to full when I swapped the other T-Case in about 2 weeks later. This wasnt with much to any driving involved... Thanks! So do you think i should go ahead and get new seals for it?
Also. Do you think itd still be a good idea to open it up JUST in case?

I would pull the hole case, get a transmission friend to take a look at it when you go to replace the seals. Depending on the mileage and how bad it was abused it never hurts to check and replace worn parts if you have it opened up. I know when I dropped my trans to have the pump rebuilt I replaced all the seals and had a mechanic check out the internals to be on the safe side before I put her back up into the jeep.

Doubt its shot. Shift it to 4... long as it shifts easy and doesn't make noise its ok. I drove mine with almost no fluid for a bit in 2 (cracked tailshaft housing) anyhow that's replaced and it works great. Shifts easy and doesn't make noise. Good to go. I certainly didn't run it on 4 with the fluid so low though.

I ran it in 4 part time for a little while. tho 90% of the driving was in 2. I have no problem shifting it. But it is no longer in the Cherokee. will that effect any thing?
I replaced it so I could have full time 4 wheel. Wisconsin Winters can be better bad and I live on a road that will most likely get plowed 4 times this year (2 less than last) So I like having full time as an option.
With that in mind and I want to replace the seals/gaskets I will need a input out put and RTV is I open it up correct?
