Default NP231 Output Shaft Dust Cover

How do I remove the pressed-on metal dust cover on the rear output shaft of this NP231 TC?

I tried heating it up, but there is really no pry point.

Thanks.

I was doing an SYE so I didn't have to worry about saving it. I just cut a relief in it and pulled it off. Are you trying to get to the seal behind it?

Yes. I'm splitting the cases to inspect before install. There were some flakes of metal in the fluid so I'm thinking the synchro ring might need replacing.

Well, it seems this doesn't need to be removed to split the cases. I was under the impression the snap ring under the dust cover needed to be removed. Anyway, got the two halves apart. Spotless inside except for a few small metal flakes caught in the oil pickup filter.

I will eventually install a SYE, so I'm curious how you got that small cover off? The one that gets replaced when installing the SYE. I think I'm going to need a puller. I got the snap ring off but the cover only lifted about a quarter inch and wouldn't budge any further.
