You may be able to do it by removing the driveshaft and yolk. You'd have to use the 'screw' method where you drill a hole into the metal part of the seal and then put a screw in there and use it as leveraging point to get the seal out. Pack the drill bit with grease to catch the metal from drilling. When I did it, I had the case open to install a SYE. With the output shaft out, you can drive the seal out with a punch from the back side.

On my NP242 I left the front half of the case installed/bolted to the transmission when I split the case open. It wasn't a hardship. Everything I needed to get to was pretty easy. The NP231 isn't much different as far as I know. The big thing with the transfer case is that the case itself is aluminum and sealed with Permatex Ultra Grey or equivalent so you can't be too careful about marring sealing surfaces or breaking chunks off flanges.

The seal for my 242 didn't have the lip. I don't see how it matters. The oil slinger doesn't require a groove to ride in.

if i would have found a correct size seal that matched the size inner and outer without the lip i probably would have used it but no luck from local stores now driving to a further one to see if this 4813v is the right one

4813v im assuming is for the rear?

i just cant find this damn seal :'(

i cross reference 16416 on my old seal, leads to the first seal the autoparts store gave me. 710046 which is incorrect.
4813v is also incorrect on the inner diameter the outside is perfect
*edit* picture of the 710046 next to the seal 16416

3946 close but too big
3946 is 3 inch outer diameter and a bigger inner diameter then my old one
