Quote: I have one, and it works great. As others have said, I beat the beans out of mine as well. The ONLY reason I'd swap it, is for the 4.1 kit, that is only available for the 231. Other than that, I see no reason to swap it. FWIW, mine is a trail only rig, and not a DD, and I rarely use the "full time" option, but still have no plans on changing it.
tera makes (or used to) a 4:1 kit for the 242, you just have to send in your case iirc

So to me personally the 242 sounds like a better case because of the ability to have kinda of an all wheel drive feature. How is the 231 different from lets say a dodge 3/4 ton with four wheel drive? When its in 4w you are just spinning one front and one rear, and while I dont think its reccomended it shouldnt hurt anything because the front and rear axles are the same gear ratio.

Quote: ok so do they make an upgraded sun gear for the 231 or would you have to pull one out of a 242?
you can not swap the gears from a 242
you can get a heavy duty kit for the 231

the 242 has a type of limited slip so you wont get
the one wheel drive like some of the trucks had

not really, its torque biased, so in full time you can still just spin one wheel.

part time on both the 231 and 242 are the same as any other part time 4x4 tcase that locks 50/50. youll still spin one front and one rear with open axle diffs.

My 242 was JUNK so I swapped it out in favor of a 231J out or an earlier wrangler. It is a really easy swap to do. Just throw a SYE in the 231 and slap it up in there. I did it all by myself, the 231 is way lighter of a TC too.. I think the swap is WELL worth it. my 231 is a beast. the 242 would always pop out of gear and was just a giant turd.

well if it was jumping out of gear it means it was a bad tc. if your jeep is lifted and you lower your tc you have to lower the linkage with it too.. maybe thats why your was jumping out of gear. just a note

i've got a 242 and beat the hell out of it....for awhile....started making grinding noises when in 4wd, H or L I am running 3.5" of lift w/o a SYE tho...so that might have something to do with it. I'm swaping it out for a 231 b/c thats what my parts jeep has. got the sye kit coming in the mail as well...
