For what it's worth I figured my 2000 XJ finally had a cracked head causing overheating-- that famous event about an infamous head on the 2000-01 Renix motors. It turned out to be the frost plug at the rear of the motor -- My Jeep had been standing outdoors from December to June while I was out of the country, and I guess northern cold weather did it in. It overheated on the first real test drive after six months. I am mentioning all this because I was betting on paying big bucks for a new head and didn't have to do do so. Lesson is check the frost plug if your Cherokee overheats. Maybe you will be lucky like me.
I still had to pull the head etcetera but a lot less cost. What a relief.
Next step: major travels and daily use coming up at end of summer -- hope it all holds together. We are now up to 175,000+ miles.
(By the way, no more overseas travel for me.)
