Sorry for this being what is most likely a stupid question... but on every automatic I've driven, when you put it into drive, you can feel the car/truck wanting to move forward. Great, no biggie, right?
My 2001 Cherokee is the same, but it wants to move a bit more forcefully... if I'm on a flat surface, it'll pretty much move itself along at 5mph forever w/o using the gas pedal, just engaged in Drive. It's not until it hits a decent grade/hill that it'll stop pushing itself forward.
It also shifts hard from neutral into drive once in a while, and seems to fight the brakes when I'm stopped at a light.
Is this anticipated behavior, or has something gone wonky? Any ideas?

Timing isn't going to be adjustable on your 2001 I don't think. You may however have another problem (slight vacuum leak or the like) that is causing it to idle too high. High idle would cause what you are describing in your op

i had the same problem with my 89 cherokee, turned out i had a loose vaccume hose. you may want to check those. idk about the 2001 models but mine has a ridiculous amount of them on the exahust and in and around the intake.

Thanks Jon, I'll do that.
Do Haynes manuals show diagrams of the vacuum lines by chance? I haven't had to mess with these on the new truck yet.

I had this issue,
Simple fix ususally the vaccuum from my air box was not there and it idled about 900rpm's but when i plugged it back in it worked at 400-500rps.. seems ok
I think yours is a little harder, mine was just a rubber tube
