Default NOOB question Broken Rear shock bolt

Hi, I just purchased a 1993 XJ for my 1st build. I was replacing the rear shocks and broke the shock bolt off. Tried to extract it with the Sears bolt extraction kit. Can not get the bolt out. The extraction hole is thru the bolt a little offset not sure if I can get it centered to retap the threads. Should I turn the shock enough and re tap the hole for the top shock bolt.

Thanks

i had that exact same problem. just twist it and re-tap a new one. it took me like fifteen minutes and it still holds up too!

I cut holes in the floor from the top to get to mine not sure if you want to go that route.

Take a punch and hammer it right on the broken bolt as hard as you can. There's a nut that's tack welded on so you can knock it off if you hit it hard enough. Then you stick 1" bolts up and into the hole using a steel wire or something, fishing it up and over into the hole. Align the shock and tighten the nuts.

I spent around an hour trying to beat the nuts off with a hammer and punch and they didn't even budge so I tried this method and it was really quick and easy.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I will just use the rocklizard method cut out the floor pan and bolt the damn thing.

Hopefully front shock wont be as bad.

Fortunately I have a friend with an air hammer and it took less than 5 minutes to "punch" all the bolts/nuts out so I could replace them with hardened bolts and nuts...Tj

Cool

Thanks for all the help. I just cut the floor pan over the bolts and installed. I tried the Air hammer method worked on that nut for over an hour but decided to grind the nut down with a my Dremel metal cut off tool. Worked like a champ painted the exposed metal with good Rustoleum rust paint. Molded a sheet of Aluminum applied RTV sealed up with sheet metal screws. Buttoned up and shock mount is not going anywhere with the grade 8 bolts I used.

Wow.. Rocklizards method not only gave me faith in myself, lol. But also was very detailed and left me with no questions! My friend and I freaked out when the bolt heads snapped off my 99 xj and welded the shock mounts. Bad idea. They both broke off within a few days.

There's no reason to cut the floor. Take a punch and hammer and knock out the weld nuts. Get a thin piece of tie wire and fish it through the hole and out toward the center of the vehicle. Wrap the tie wire into the threads of a 3/8"x1" bolt and gently pull the bolt into the hole with the wire. It's a piece of cake. Pull the new bolts in, slide the shock into place and install lock washers and nuts from the bottom.

i just experienced the same problem and am not finding the hammer and screwdriver method to be as successful as others. I can't seem to get enough leverage to whack it hard enough, and not to mention i believe the bolt part that snapped off is still threaded in. i don't have access to any air tools, i've been driving around the last two days with only a front-lifted jeep because of this problem!
