No turnover. 97 cherokee
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Heres the deal: Jeep has been sitting for a couple months have been running it once a month or so just to keep the fluids moving and to make sure the battery wasn't completely dead. Recently started hooking up my sound system and went to start the jeep and it wouldn't even turnover. I charged the battery and still no turnover. A while ago i checked the fuses in the passenger side and might have mixed up a couple spots where they go(ya, dumbass i know) anyway i put a screwdriver across the solenoid on the starter and it turned over. I'm guessing this is a bad relay or a missplaced fuse? Also when i turn the key to start i hear a quiet clicking noise from the passenger side fuse box. ITS not coming from the starter solenoid. I already tried hitting the starter with a hammer and that was a no go. Sorry bout the big description haha. Any thoughts would help thanks.

If you have the AW4 auto tranny, try starting in neutral and also try starting while wiggling the shift lever (auto of course).
If either of these techniques allows the engine to turn over, the problem is your "neutral safety switch". Can often be refurbished and returned to function.

Ok so I can start it by placing a screwdriver across the solenoid. Still wont turnover by key. Tried starting in neutral (And wiggling)and also checked all my fuses and the placement of them. Also switched the starter relay with another one from the fuse box and still no cranking. This is pissing me off. Let me what ya think i should do. Im thinking of buying a new starter relay and seing if that does anything.

Well I'm not so sure about the 97s but my 87 has an ignition switch right on top of the steering column. I can see it without moving anything. Good luck

Ok boys i replaced the starter relay, cleaned my battery terminals, and grounds and ****all happend . Also found that clicking noise coming from the passenger side was a relay behind the glovebox. tried switching that aswell but again nothing. Going to get a multimeter tomorow and check to see if im getting power to the solenoid on the starter. The only thing that would make sense to me is the starter solenloid quitting on me. Gonna have to wait for the multimeter to make sense of this. Any input is appreciated thanks guys!

I would try this ... Take a test light ground the clamp end to a good ground and the pointy end to the s treminal of the starter solenoid have someone put the key to the crank position and see if the test light lights up... If it does the problem is with the starter if it don't check the ignition switch for power comming out of the switch when in the crank position.... Most of the time when my jeep wont start I push the shifter forward toward the dash while holding the key in the crank position and it starts....

I'm pretty sure the NSS grounds a relay to let it start. If you could ground that wire you could rule out/identify the NSS.
Added: 10-4 TJ, wanted to add "with it turned to start"

In the link I posted in reply #3 in this thread, it shows how you can temporarily bypass the nss with a jumper wire.
Doing so is always a quick way to rule this piece of hardware in or out.

update: so i replaced the starter solenoid with a brand new one and it still won't ****ing turn over, even when i put a screwdriver across it, which led me to think its the starter, aswell i smashed it with a hammer and it didnt turn over. Im very short on cash and don't wanna be replacing parts left right and center. I still need to get a multimeter and check to see if im getting power to the little wire. Do you guys think its the starter? Just wondering because it turned over when i jumped it with the old solenoid on. Need help boys im getting pissed off i hate electrical ****
