A couple more questions:

If I have to replace parts should I purchase the whole starter or just the solenoid?

If I can just clean it up... I was consulting that starter cleaning guide above and it mentions greasing the gearbox in the starter, how would i do that? just plop it in there and shove it around the gears with my fingers? thanks

Take the three gears out, clean them up then use some lithium grease on them when you reassemble.

The gears aren't what's messing the starter up, it's the oil on the wires in the cap.

I live in an apartment, so id have to take my car to a friends house to work on it, which is why im lagging on trying to take anything apart yet. I've read up on changing ignition switches, starters, and nss switches and I'm thankful that none of them seem to be too difficult to do myself.
dont know if anyone's said this so far, that's an indicator of needing a new starter. DO NOT hit it with a hammer anymore. the big, old style starters you could do that with but the kind they use now a days (cant remember the name off the top of my head) use a permanent magnet in em and if you break that, it's not gonna start again period.
