Check the fluid level and throttle-trans cable. Check you didn't smash the oil cooler lines too. A bad solenoid will not cause a failure to engage in reverse. For the clips, hose them out with cleaner really well first as crud can prevent them from disengaging. I believe they are like the clips up at the radiator and you need to push in slightly then squeezed inward to release them from the lip on the outer metal part of the connector.

plenty of fluid, works fine apart from reverse has virtually no power at all
no point sulking, cracked out the tools, the clips came out of my spare ok
there seems to be a couple of flat green o-rings in the trans that receive the plastic clips and cooler pipes
Is it possible to replace those o-rings and clips?....(I shall go and see my local trans builder tommorow, they might have the parts)
the ones in the vehicle look to be in better condition, but I didnt disconnect them today
just an update on the trans cooler lines, where they go into the trans
Of course the plastic locking tab fell to pieces upon removal, the plastic being brittle, but looks like I might have found a solution
The auto trans guys looked at me like they never seen one before
a mate of mine who is a mechanic said they look like standard 3/8 fuel injection disconnects...the one you can see pictured, and indeed, its dimensions are almost identical, and it locks right in there
there are 2 (green) o-rings inside the male Dorman connector on the trans body ( I thought there was only one)
What you can see are 2 each, metric & imperial o-rings, the metric are slightly bigger, and lock it in tight
The complete metal Dorman connector is not readily available over here, and they can snap off, so you (and I) are cactus if this fix fix doesnt work
I dont know what was wrong with the one that was in there that lost reverse
It would have been a good idea to test the pressure in reverse, but I never did
its possible some failure within the valve body could be the issue, there are only a few things that can fail to lose just reverse ?
since I got it, had the following symptoms;
took more than specified 1.5secs to engage reverse,
took 15secs to spool up reverse on 1st startup for the day
did not seem to engage lockup torque convertor as expected
showed signs of previous neglect
hopefully the replacement trans that I pulled out of a rusty '96 that had 160k miles on it will behave
