Default No Fuel At Injector Rail (1990 XJ)

I was on my way home on an empty tank of gas, when the car started to shudder and die, so I parked it on the side of the road real quick and walked the next couple blocks to a gas station. I put 2 gallons in the tank, tried to start it, and it wouldn't run. It would barely start, and it needed constant pumping of the gas to get it to run, albeit very poorly, somewhere down near 250 RPMs. I got a tow back to my house, put even more gas in it and it still did the same thing, so I swapped out the fuel filter in case the old one was clogged. Now, it wont even to start. It just endlessly cranks. But when I switch the ignition on, I can hear the whirr of the pump behind me for a couple seconds. I took the feed line off at the rail, and it's bone dry. I don't know where to go from here. If the fuel pump is working properly then why is there no fuel at the rail? Did I miss something? Fuel pressure regulator maybe? I'm still not too familiar with the FI system on this thing. Any and all suggestions are much appreciated...this is my daily driver!

Energizing of the pump doesn't mean the pump is functional.

If you have NO pressure at the fuel rail and the pump energizes and runs for 2 seconds when the key is in the ON position, this sounds like a faulty pump.

Sounds like you have a bunch of air in the line, happened to me the last time I ran out.try bleeding the air out at the valve that looks like a tire valve,be careful of gas splashing out.keep cycling the key on while bleeding the air off
