Default No Front Wheel Drive

Hi I have lost drive to my front wheels, there is a metal on metal grinding sound coming from the front of the vehicle my first thought is that the front diff has failed due to my wife driving on tarmac at normal road speeds in with four wheel drive selected. Does any one have any experience or advice for such a situation.
Thanks

Yes.
Stop driving it.

Pull the front diff cover and inspect the Ring and Pinion and the spider/sidegears in the carrier.

Post pics please.
