Today i swapped out my np231 transfer case for another 231 because 4wd didn't work in the first one. After swapping it out, I tested it, put it back in 4hi then once in gear, it makes a real loud grinding noise from the tc; same as the first one did. I thought a new tc would have been the solution but obviously not. Did I just get unlucky with two bad transfer cases or Any ideas what the problem is?

the linkage from the handle underneath to the TC. you might try disconnecting the handle alltogether and shifting it into 4hi from underneath to make sure it is engaging fully.

if you can engage it fully by disconnecting it, it rules out a bad TC and points to the linkage from there up.
