Default Nitrogen in Tires

Last time I went to Midas to mount my tires they said if you inflate them with Nitrogen for $5 a tire that it will improve MPG by 1-2 miles. Anyone ever tried and saw results?

the down side is if you have a leak, or you just need air you have to go back to somewhere with that crap. i don't think its anything special. you aren't supposed to mix with air.

Nitrogen is less dense then air and will float on top of it but its not lighter. Nitrogen makes up around 75 percent of air. That said you wont be getting better mileage but you will get better tire wear in conjunction with not having to check tire pressure as often. I wouldn't spend the money personally.

i used to work at a dealership that had a nitrogen machine and i got it for free. it might have given me some help in my exploder (only got 13 mpg any way) but it got my nissan sentra from 36 to 40 mpg. i also didn't have to add air to either tires for 4 months. definately worth the 20 if you got it to spend...

not worth it. if you wheel your heep, you should air down for the trail.

If you wheel your Jeep then leave regular air in it. My Ram is getting aout 2 mpg better since nitro filling my tires my wife's KJ has improved by about 4 mpg. We do it at the dealership I work for. If you get a flat or a tire goes low you can use regular air in the tires.

Nitrogen molecues are larger than oxygen so basicly most tires leak oxygen very very slowly nitrogen is released slower because of the side of the molecules

sounds like the choice has come down to:If you are lazy and dont want to air up your tires, go with it.If you dont want to waste your cash, and your ok with airing up your tires, then stick with air.. thats basically what ive gotten out of this thread..agreed?

Well, not saying lazy but just don't want to, but yeah. If you air down like most do on trails then its not worth it. If you do make sure you have them cool little green valve stem caps, I think those are worth 1-2 miles per gallon

ok i think i know more about this then every one here
i work at big o tires and it does help your mpg and i cost 20 bucks listen to this the gas stations witha green hose for air guess what nitro ya thats right because regualer air has moisture in it and it breaks the machine and nitro dont and most of the time people at my work dont even put nitro in the tires i do im not mean but ya just got to a gas station with a green hose put about two psi over bc there is a little bit of air in the nitro and when the weather changes the nitro will be left by itself

umm i worked at belletire and a dealership that both offered it and i think it was a waste of time to fill my own tires for free! The concept is that you will get better gas mileage because your tires are at the right PSI. Same concept goes for the tire wear. So pretty much if you arent lazy and you take the time to check your tire pressure then nitrogen in the tires will do nothing for your gas mileage or tire wear.

PS IF YOU HAVE TO YOU CAN ADD AIR TO YOUR TIRES THAT HAVE NITROGEN IN THEM I PROMISE THEY WONT EXPLODE!! THE ATMOSPHERE IS 75% NITROGEN

Kinda like what I said above. Seriously...you will not get better mileage by using this stuff if you keep on top of your tires PSI. Air is free!
