Newbie with a few questions. did search
Hello everyone,
I just bought my first jeep. It's a 1998 XJ 4.0 auto. Bought the truck with a blown HG. So, my buddy (master mechanic) and I put in a salvage yard motor from a 94. I won't go into the saga of getting the thing running but
here's a list of the things I/we have done.
new HG
new cap,rotor, and plugs
new oil pressure sensor
new valve cover gasket
new oil pump
new water pump
new thermostat
new fluids/gaskets for front/rear (8.25) diffs, transfer case (fluid only), brake fluid, transmission fluid, and PS fluid
flushed the new motor with gunk motor clean
a few bottles of injector cleaner
Lucas trans conditioner added
Here's two problems I hope you guys/gals can give advice on.
1. the motor does not like to start on the first turn over. I have searched and tried the cycling of turn the key on and off a few times, but it just does not like to start on the first try. I am going to test the fuel pressure soon to see if it is the pump and I will test the CPS. Is there any other things I should be looking at?
2. I was changing the raido out the other day and put the truck into 1/2 gear (auto) to give me room to pull the trim piece off. The jeep was in gear but not running and it started rolling across my court. It does this in all gears except park? I searched a little and did the throttle cable adjustment (no luck) and also found it could be the NSS. Once again is there anything I should be looking at besides theese.
Sorry for the long read, but just wanted to give the full story. I look forward to joining this community and modding my XJ. I come from a long history of owning and modding VW's.
Thanks
Brian

It will turn over for about five seconds on the first attempt and sputter but may start. Second attempt is a good solid turn over and start.
Is that a feature on the transmission? I've never heard of a trans doing this. Thanks for the help
