Newb w/ problems- check engine light
Hey Everyone- I just bought my first Cherokee on monday... 2001 Cherokee sport, automatic with 96000 mi. Awesome ride!
The check engine light was on when I bought it but the dealer said it was a sensor and fixed it. I drove it around town and then drove it from PA to Ohio where I work. Everything was great.
Today I drove it to the store came back out and the light was back on and would blink periodically when I drove it. There was a slight shudder at first.
10 minutes ago I went back out and did the song and dance with the trip meter and such and no error codes came up. It seems to be running fine but the light is still on.
What does this mean?

Check engine light ON means there is something that needs your attention. Take it to your local AutoZone and they usually will check the code with an OBD II reader. Cycling through the trip menu will not tell why the light is on. If the code light is blinking this indicates a Major problem that should be check ASAP and you should not be driving the Jeep. Many times the light will come on after filling the gas tank. People do not turn the gas cap enough times to make the clicking sound and complete the seal to the spout. There is a ceramic disk built into the gas cap that cracks and creats a low vacume leak code. O2 sensor is a common code and most cherokees have 2 O2 sensors. If your light was blinking get it checked ASAP.

Blinking check engine light is usually a misfire in one or more cylinders. Take it to a Jeep dealer assuming one is still in business in your area.
Now.

I don't want to drive it anywhere, but I started it up last night and it sounded fine and drove fine (though just through a parking lot). The light was on, but not blinking. I did just fill it up with gas, so I'll check the cap (can't be that simple can it).
I'm in Columbus, OH. I need to find someplace to take it around here, should it be towed or can I drive it to the shop?

Drove it to work about 4 minutes away- sounded good, ran good...
light was on, but no blinking
I'm going to try and take it to autozone tonight after work.

If the light starts blinking don't drive it far or severe damage can occur. Since the light came on you have a fault code stored and can access it yourself with this method. http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2719

I went to autozone yesterday and they said there is a malfunction in injector 4...
I drove it home with no problems and later that night went out to start it up and the light was gone? The bulb's not dead (I checked).
Everything seems fine- but I still want to get it checked out.
Anybody have any opinions? Was the loose gas cap part of the problem? Was the heavey rain causing a short somewhere?

Check the conection and wiring leading to that injector.
Also if you have an ohmmeter and are hady enough to use it you can check the resistance.
Or better yet bring it back to the dealership and explain to them what the problem is.
They knew about it when you purchased it and they misdiagnosed it, they should fix it.
