I just bought a 1999 XJ 4WD 4.0 5speed with 138,000 miles. I had an XJ a few years ago but my dad drove it more than I did and it had 295,000 miles. My 5 speed whines in 2nd and 3rd gear (at less than 1500 RPM). I do not remember our old cherokee doing the same thing. The previous owner said he checked the fluid (know him personally, but do not know what fluid is in it). I was just wondering if a whine is normal in 2nd gear? It goes away about 2000RPM. I was considering changing the tranny fluid to some Redline MT90. Does anyone else have this whine??

 

If there isnt enough fluid in the trans it will make noise. probably a good idea to change/check the fluid. I bet at higher speeds the road noise drowns out the trans noise.

My ax15 makes noise thats dependent upon speed and i can hear it which is cause my bearings are old and tired.

 

Is the filler hole fairly easy to get to?
