215s are kinda narrow, 225s were original size on most XJs other than the base models, and 235s were the next larger size that still fit and cleared without lifting or cutting.
235x75x15 translates to 28.88" x 9.25" x 15" as compared to the 31 x 10.50 x 15" that you're drooling over.

I could be mistaken but I was told on another thread that to fit 31's with out cutting just extend your front and rear bumpstops by 2 inches atleast and add a nut to your steering stops to keep the tires from rubbing the lca... again someone will no better than I do as i have yet to do this but it was my plan also.

Ok. What exactly and how am I gonna make them fit. I am completely clueless and have not many tools to work with. what am I gonna need?

And what the heck is a bump stop? I am sorry, I know absolutely nothing about cars and have to do all work myself. I'm a fast learner though.

Bump stops is usually made of rubber or urethane. They cushion the axles when say you hit a big bump that uses the whole cycle of the spring. Bump stops keeps the axles from bottoming out and getting damaged and damaging other things. They can also keep your tires out of your fenders.

I am not sure on the front but the rear is easy, just 2 bolts each. Although i wouldn't use taller bumpstops just so those 31"s won't eat your fenders. Most likely you would be hitting them all the time. They're there as a back-up for the springs, not to take constant abuse. I think your going to have to do either the lift or trimming. Sorry, but i just don't think the bumpstops are a solution.

**** my husband is gonna kill me! Ok so the question now is what would you do? I'm leaning towered just cutting. I don't plan on keeping her forever and she's not the prettiest and I am on a super tight budget. I am pretty much just trading these people tires am I gonna be ok driving the two miles home to make the adjustments?

I second the no tight turns, once they are on there look to see how much clearance you have. Turn the wheel to see how tight you can turn and probably avoid bigger bumps. The fender trimming will work fine and can cost nothing. Just do some research on here and search the web.

I don't know how to put them on here but go to the how-to section. There's two good ones on there to show you the basics of fender trimming. The first is for the front "31s trimming fenders fixing rust spots" by rustylaredo. Just ignore the rust stuff and it is up to you if you want to cut off the front bottom of the fender. For the rear go to "cutting rear fenders" by irongrave. That will give you an idea of what is entailed. Although see if just removing the flares gives you enough clearance before you start cutting.
