And that right there is exactly why I WOULD run a turbo on my ZJ... But don't bother putting a turbo on a tired old motor. If you already have blowby, it will only get worse. No sense losing 1/2 your boost past old, loose rings. Also, a high quality head gasket would be in order too. But you would be very surprised what just a couple pounds of boost can do. And I would absolutely run an intercooler with a ZJ turbo...

slapping a turbo on a motor is different then properly installing one...
Checking the condition of the motor is first. If the motor is healthy enough then the next thing is to research.... a lot. It seems like with the manifold it would save you work. Turbo, intercooler, BOV, FMS, and support equipment can be had by universal sources.
If the turbo is properly installed it will kick in giving you added power without destroying your engine. Going mild and KNOWING WHEN TO STOP PUSHING is extremely important when doing a custom forced induction application.

ford used a turbo in the turbo stangs of hte 80s for improved gas mileage on the highway. turbo boost would raise going up hills to keep the engine rpms the same so it was, technically, more fuel efficient. what it saved on the highway was lost on the street though as a person was more apt to use the boost for faster accelerations.
if you did it properly, you could see gas mileage increases from a set up turbo on a 4.0. but someone doing it and then driving it properly is what the problem would be. maybe use two progressive turbos so you have low power and higher power?

turbo cherokees are not new though. i have a friend who has had one for about 5 years. i used to read his build because he had it on e30tech.com in a section for a certain group of member that was not accessible to everyone. he races his in some race like the baja or something.
he used megasquirt to control everything and ran twins, i believe. i'll have to try and raise him on e30tech and verify but i know turbo cherokees are old news.
