Default New Transfer Case Question

My 84-91 Factory Service Manual describes removing the shift linkage with a shim in the shifter:
"Position the shift lever as far to the rear as possible and insert a 118-inch thick shim between the shift lever and the shift gate (see illustration).

I assume that it means a 1-1/8" shim. But I would really like some input on this. Is this necessary or are there alternate approaches. Thanks

Pretty sure that should be 1/8", not 1 1/8". But most defintietly NOT 118", which a little over 9ft.

I have never really done that when removing the linkage, however I would do that when re installing and adjusting the linkage

I knew it was a typo. I just wanted to be sure.
