Default new tranny problems

Just put a 98 30-80 tranny from an XJ into my 96 XJ. Now it seems like it wont go into first gear. I had to rewire the plug for all the sensors on the drivers side. All wires matched. And I used the neutral safty fron the 96.

Grab the TCU from the 98. See if that fixes it. What does 30-80 mean?

I'm not sure how this will work. On 96 and earlier, the TCU is bolted to the back of the plastic panel under the glove compartment, the one that runs the full length of the cab. It has a single connector that unplugs.

I thought the TCU was integrated into the ECU on 97+, so I am not sure how that will factor in.

Are we talking about stander or auto aw-4 transmission. If automatic transmission will the transmission shift 1-2-3-4 manual. If it shifts manual, could be solenoid not working.
Is Jeep xj a 4.0 engine

He said he had to rewire the plug for the sensors so it's obviously the AW-4 which only comes in automatic.

If it shifts manual then the solenoids are fine. The shift lever only actuates the electronics directly on the transmission, bypassing the TCU - there is no true manual shift on the AW4.

So i have been driving it for a few months now with it skipping 2nd gear and going right to 3rd but just yesterday i noticed if i step on the brake a little while accelerating it goes through all the gears fine. And also tapping the brake while accelerating kicks it down a gear for a second

2 things: could be worn 2-4 band or stuck open governor pressure solenoid.

its the combination of reving up the rpm while cause a restriction with the brakes that allows the shift point pressure to rise.

If I jump the brake switch the trans works fine so its something electronic but of course the brake lights are on all the time. How is the brake switch related to the trans.
