Default new owner need some help

Theres a slight grinding at 45 and really rough shifts from park into any gear. This is my first jeep and I've only had it for 5 weeks. Any ideas of where to start would be really helpful. Its a 99 Cherokee 4.0

Trans is grinding at 45? Something else?
It slams into gear from park? What's the idle speed and how loose are your u-joints?

Start by changing the transfer case fluid. I had that problem on my '92 and it helped a lot.

Other things to check would be U-joints, rear gears, trans fluid condition.

From what direction do you hear the sound? If it is coming from up front it would be a bad wheel bearing, front axle u-joints, bad front pinion bearing, Front drive shaft U-joints, transmission, transfer case, rear drive shaft u-joints, rear pinion bearing, rear wheel bearings......etc.

I feel it grinding like dozer tracks with stones in the wheels. I don't have carpets I bedlined my interior. All of the u joints were replaced at the same time and have less than 8k the bearings could be it. The rare times I do actually hear it its coming from the hump under my console that's why I think it might be the tranny but I'm by no means a mechanic so wouldn't begin to k ow what to look for if I started taking it all apart.
