Default New owner in need of help.

I just picked up a 94 4x4 cherokee for $500. Runs great body is in good shape. Aside from a few fixes here and there its good. But the small fixes are what i need info on.
The belt squeals but not sure where to tighten it at.
And the other is. While driving i put it in neutral and rev the engine at high rpms i hear a grinding sound and it feels as if its trying to go into gear. Btw its an automatic.
Any advice?

there should be a spot to tighten the belt on the side of the power steering pump, as for how tight to make it from what i hear you should just barely be able to twist the belt a quarter turn, serpentine belt generally are supposed to be pretty tight, and as far as the neutral thing i would say just don't rev the engine high in neutral, might have to take it to the shop to fix that

Well the belt tensioner is on the drivers side on the p/s pump down low. Its kinda a pain about four bolts to loosen on pump then one on the far right corner to loosen or tighten. Do yourself a favor and oil up that long tension bolt, they break alot. Try some brake clean on the belt to clean it then belt dressing on it(while running) but not too much dressing or.it just makes a mess. As for the tranny does the shifter feel all loose and sloppy like the linkage may be out of adjustment? Like even though you think you are in neutral you are actually in between gears. That could cause it to want to fall back into gear when you take your hand off the shifter? Not sure though, thats a new one to me.

I just got the jeep 2 days ago and with the belt squeals i figured id rev the engine to see if the belt squeals stop that's when i noticed the neutral problem.
I don't believe its a linkage problem but ill look at it and see. Better to start with a cheap fix first then spend money i don't have at the moment.
