a little background on me. ive typically lived & worked in the city. so never bothered to learn to drive until last month. oh yea, im 36. lol anyhow. ive always loved jeeps so of course since i started driving ive been watching craigslist. i found & got my new baby. an 85 cherokee. needed a water pump & an oil pan gasket. only $650.
so saturday morning i bring it home and figure out what & where the water pump is finally get it in and running by sunday evening.
this is what brings me here. not sure if its an xj, but think it is. all i know is it is fully chopped into a ragtop. now from looking around here i know the rollcage is very important for a chopped cherokee. but what do i need to look for to make sure its a safe rig to drive to work and back everyday? it does look to me like the cage is from a decent size round stock. like not paper thin.
im already stoked on my new baby, so im hoping i dont get alot of bad things here. but im ready to work on anything i need to.

Its kind of hard to tell, but I think it is a 2 door XJ. The doors just look too big to be a Comanche.
And it has no cab corners...

2dr xj with the top chopped and the door handles removed. I'm assuming you have door poppers on it? Looks pretty sweet with the top off. What motor and trans does it have? Is it a 2wd or 4wd? also have the windows been removed from the doors or are they just laying down in there with no frame work to roll up onto? looks like a cool project. I'd put a little lift on it and some decent looking wheels and tires

its a 4 cyl. manual. im already thinking about a little lift. the windows are made out of the same cloth as the top and can zip out or pull off. i need to redo the windows their way scratched up. but the guy gave me a roll of the clear vinyl. no door poppers. i might have to do that..
but as embarasing as it is to admit. i have only been driving a month now and have to teach myself to drive stick before i can really get into making it look good

There are a number ways to find out what you have. The previous posters are right on the money as far as I'm concerned, but looking at the 'bed' area should give you a clear indication as well. Of course, you can skip all of that and just decode the VIN
. That would tell you for sure.

My opinion it's obviously an XJ because of no cab corners, no bed front, and length of doors. It's a nice little truck that stands out from the crowd regardless of the body designation.

wow, thanx for all the nice feedback. the vin decoder however kinda threw in a monkey wrench. lol the vin# on the title does not match the one on the dash. i know the guy told me he bought another 85 and was swapping out parts, and the dash was one of the things that he swapped. now i guess i have some research to do.. lol
