What kind of work is required to drop the 4.0 into the jeep? Is it a direct bolt in with same ecu and all or do i need new harness etc

4.0L but you will have your work cut out for you. You need to massage the firewall and get the wiring harness from the donor including the ECU. The transmission is also going to need to change along with the motor and ECU.
To be brutally honest you would be better off trying to find a 4.0L Cherokee to replace your current 4 banger Cherokee.

You can do the swap and spend the money sweat and blood to get the same thing the regular 4.0L owner already has so in the long run it is your choice. If it were me I would look for a different Jeep to start with, if you need more power than the 4 banger.
That was the root of my prior post.
