I am thinking about purchasing a 94 Cherokee 2x4 4.0 manual. It has 84k on it and basically no options. What is this worth? Anything that I should look out for?

Thanks in advance!

You need to look at the Kelly Blue Book on the price. No nothing particular to that specific year. All XJs need to be checked for loose/worn components and fluid conditions. Also check for rusty floors and rockers. That should about do it. If you have a specific question then post it and we will try to answer it for you.

Check Craigslist in your area and completed auctions on Ebay in your area and that will tell you the REAL PRICES not that silly KBB.

Let me ask you guys who are stuck on KBB?

Why???????

KBB can say it's worth 5K but if nobody is willing to pay 5K is KBB going to buy it?

I buy them cheap where I live and could turn a nice profit off them on Ebay if I wanted to.

Next it could be worth 5K but worth more to him or the next guy and there is a bidding war.

KBB is nothing more then a quideline for value..Basically gives you a starting point. Then you look on craigslist and local classifieds and find out how much they are selling for. Then you look at the jeep and see what all needs repair and fixing. Find out how much these repairs would cost at a shop to be fixed then bargain down the price. Remember this is a 2 wd though so it's not worth as much as a 4wd..Also contact your banks loan department and ask them what the top end value is based on bank loan rules.

Example a 94 2wd 4 door sport 4.0 5 speed 84k miles in KBB for my area is valued in good condition which few 94's will hit that rating is valued at $2200. Around here you are likely to get that. Now lets say that jeep needs new tires, but everything else is in good shape and no other major repairs well I'd offer 1800 and go from there. I paid 1800 for a 91 Limited 4wd and feel I got a good deal even though it needed a new motor, which didn't bother me since I could get a reman for $900 so I have $2700 invested plus some time for a nice slick never wrecked no rust 4wd that had a new motor in it and was fully loaded.. I bought it because I knew I could do all the work and fix it up how I wanted and the cost wasn't going to be to high. Heck had no rust and solid body and drive train other then the motor.

Just to note, around here XJ's with 150K 4wd in good condition go for around $3k+...So how things work in your area is completely different then how they work in other areas. So unless you have specific experience in a specific market do not discredit the methods and how to value the jeeps.

KBB it! Most people use KBB for a guideline. Most people when looking for a vehicle will KBB your vehicle.

Why be so hard on a guideline. It was pretty accurate for me and may be more so in some areas. Everyone doesn't know the value of things like maybe you do who buys and sells for a living or sideline. So they need a guide which KBB provides.
That is Why!!!!!!!!!!

Everybody except some dealers use the KBB or NADA.

You got a reman for $900????????? Where ? and how much for a 5.2 or 5.9?

Next if you read again I was the one who posted the hell with KBB, I go by local prices.

Oh around here KBB is only used by the average Joe and it causes confusion.
NADA has weekly updates using regional sales and auction prices and local news prices.

Go into a used dealer and ask him to look up your vehicle in the NADA "older used cars" book and show you dealer whosale.
You won't like what you see.

And yeah I grew up in the shop and buy and sell so I am always looking for a better deal.
I have a former dealer who has me looking for a plow truck for him.
I bought a Ramcharger I found once that was 8 years old had 5k on it and was mint and never titled (DMV thought it was a scam) the truck was bought new to plow a big estate in Meridan CT.

I gotta go with jamaica on this one. KBB says $2250 for my '95 Cherokee Sport, but only a fool would buy one in this area for that.

Right now, a mid-90s Jeep Cherokee is a $1000 car, if it will sell at all. Overshooting the real price of a car by 100% is not "guideline", it's stupid.

Thank you.

If you want a cheap heep buy one out of state and tell the transporter you are in no hurry and it will go from drop yard to drop yard and only cost you a few hundred $.

So it makes sense, 1K is average here (private seller/ whosale) and I try to get it for less.
I just look for no rust vehicles because I know most aren't body men but can swap a driveline.

Thanks for the info guys. I wasn't sure if there was something in particular to look out for on this model. I didn't really look it over completely yet, just something I saw last weekend that look like it would be something that I would drive. I am looking for something to commute with as I am racking way too many miles on my wifes HHR and I am currently selling my Yukon because it is way too thirsty to use daily and I don't need it for towing anymore (also selling boat).

A 1994 with 84k on it is what caught my attention to begin with but it looked in fairly good shape at first glance. The drivers door seemed to sag a little and the paint was faded on the top corners of the roof but as far as rust goes, it looked pretty good for being in Michigan. Inside was pretty nice as well and you could tell someone took good care of it.

So how bad is this thing going to handle in the snow without having 4 wheel drive? It needs good tires put on it so is there a particular brand that hooks up well for the Cherokee's?

Thanks for the price info as well. They had 2500 bucks marked on the window but I was planning on trying to beat him up on the price. Cant hurt to try with the current state of the auto industry and you guys have given me some general idea on value for it.

Thanks again!
