Hey all,

My name is Dean, new member here. I've owned 3 Jeep Cherokees now and after selling my last one I had to get another one......I just bought a 99 Cherokee today with a blown engine. I have located a 96 Jeep 4.0 out of a 96 Cherokee. So hello all..............here is my first question. What all will have to be changed swapping in the 96 4.0 into my 99 Jeep????? Go easy on me......still navigating through the searches here .

Thanks guys!

Welcome to the forum, I did the same mistake, I sold my clean 2000 about a year ago and I regret it ever since so I got me a 1988 about a week ago and I love it.

Am new to the forum so am still learning.

you can do a formal intro in the Intruduction section, the Mod might move this one.

I picked this one up for $1000 and the engine for $200......not too bad I thought. The body and interior are near perfect on it. I'll post up some pics tomorrow..........

yeah give us some pics. I dont think you would have to change much but def. make sure before you start because I know the body styles are alittle different after 1997 so i would hope there arent to many problems for you.

If your swapping it into a 99 the hole emissions is different I know. The wiring I think is the same though cause they upgraded that in 96 before they went to the new body style in 97. But you can put the intake manifold from the 99 on the 96 for about a 23 hp gain. They made the manifold bigger to create more horsepower becuase of the increase in emissions that caused a decrease in power. Thats why a 99 creates 193 HP instead of the old 190. But put the bigger manifold on a jeep without the increased emissions and you'll get an awesome gain in power

Oh, and welcome to the forum from NC

No chnges as far as I can think of but retain the 96 computer and wiring harness just in case but I think the 99 one will work just fine.

Well I picked up the engine yesterday. I got it home and started disassembly and rubbed off the dirt to see the engine code on the valve cover and it said ZJ ! I didn't even check it at the salvage yard. Anyway, my question is now is will a 96 ZJ 4.0 fit into my 99 XJ Cherokee? It looks like the timing cover is different........I had already planned on changing all of the electrical stuff..........

i think if you just treat it as a long block you'll be fine. keep every original part in the jeep, and just swap in the block and head.

they came on all later 4.0. its a ram style intake manifold. i think wrangler was a little later than the cherokees, but from around 99 on all 4.0 had this intake. i want one.

you'll notice the difference when you see it, can't miss the difference in the two manifolds.

About $40-$60 at most J/Ys but some places may be higher. I called my local yards and they had none but said that would be the price if they did. I was looking for 99 manifolds.

I'll try to find the write up on making the swap, but so far I've had no luck locating it

It was a very good write up along with a bunch of others by the same guy, I used to use it as a good resource but I can't seem to find it. I hope he didn't take it off the web.
