Default New to me renix

Just bought a '90 Wagoneer Woody Limited. It needs some work but with what I've learned working on my '91 and what you guys will teach me I'm sure I'll get it back in shape quick. It's an auto with the xfer case that has full time and part time 4x4 (which one is that again?). The first problem I want to tackle is it idles low, and will occasionally die when accelerating from a start or coming to a stop. What should I look at first? Thanks. Coach

242 transfer case.

Lots of stuff to do on a Renix to insure trouble-free ownership. Cheap and easy. Want a list of my Renix write-ups to choose from? I'll even prioritize them for ya.

A good place to start is always with a good tuneup- New distributor cap/rotor with brass contact, new spark plug wires, new plugs (many people on here have had good experiences with Champion Coppers), give the throttle body a good cleaning, clean the IAC, adjust the TPS, give it a good oil change with a quality filter (for example WIX/Napa Gold), change out the air filter if it needs it.. This shoulda-oughta help out at least some!

Cruiser, that would be awesome!! Is the 242 xfer case good? How do you operate it? I have the regular one in my '91.

I think cruiser should sell his write-ups. And then give me 20% of the profits for the idea And this is how I operate my 242 without any probems:
1. Stop jeep
2. Put tranny in neutral, keep foot on brakes
3. Move 4x4 lever into desired range (neutral and 4lo tend to be tight and tricky, give it a good pull but don't completely force it)
4. Once desired range is selected, put tranny in drive, pull away slowly, and make sure the dash lights come on to show it is engaged. (part time will show for 4lo also) It should handle a little tougher, depending on the surface you are driving on and the range you are in.
5. To disengage, repeat steps 1-3 and make sure lights go out and it drives like it should in 2wd.
**note: Full-time can be used all the time, just beware of drivetrain wear, tire wear, and less mpg's. Part-time should be used only offroad on loose surfaces. Reserve 4lo for offroad in mud, sand, or snow. 4lo is used for optimum traction on tricky surfaces.

Have fun wheeling!

I guess what I meant to ask is what is the difference between full time and part time? My '91 has part time, meaning it is only in 4x4 when I engage the transfer case, I had a chevy that was full time meaning the front end was always engaged, so how does this work? Thanks.

Yea, that's worded a little funny. "Part time" means it's so fully on that you shouldn't use it unless you are on something slippery enough so something can slip and keep it from binding up.

In "Full Time", the front and rear are not locked and can be used more freely.

In full time, if one wheel is on ice, or air, you can be at a stop with just that wheel spinning. (I think)

In part time, one on the rear, and one on the front needs to loose traction before you stop.
