Default new to me cherokee some ?s

I bought a 94 cherokee sport from a guy last month. Its has a police package or something. There's a plate on the firewall that says department of natural resources state of Mi. it has a spotlight and nifty holes all over from a radio cb or something. The drunk dude had bought it from a state surplus auction. It has a winch that runs off of a pump that I can't figure out how to operate. I have a pull **** that says pto on it if I pull it I hear a grinding noise, not good. I was told by him it was bored out and stroked? I think he said it was 60 over? How can I find out if this is real? Its as fast as my roommates stock 2005 auto. mustang gt. Also which 4x4 setting do I drive in part time or full time? My friends 96 only has one 4 wheel high? Why does this one have two is it special of the police package or because its a different year? Thanks.

post some pics if you know how! Does the winch work off the factory power steering pump? P.T.O. is like what I have on my john deere, power take off. Its like a device that runs off of an engine or gearbox with **** actuation. I'm guessing this may run your winch? Do you have receipts for the engine work? I guess you could pull a plug and use a rod or dowel to find the piston depth while having someone turn the front of the crank, then compare that to stock 4.0. If your ride is as fast as a gt it must be pretty modded. Sounds like you may have the 242 transfer case instead of the 231. If you are on semi bad roads you use the part time, if its real bad use full time.

Sounds like a reasonably well equipped rig. At least you won't need to punch holes for off-road lights and radio gear. That's a hydraulic winch set-up, commonly used in tow trucks and flatbeds, good stuff! Check the fluid status. The grinding noise is actually normal and it's likely due to the position of the forward/reverse switch. Have you located that switch/lever yet? It's probably out by the winch but is sometimes located either under dash or down along-side the tranny tunnel. If the cable is fully retracted and the switch is still in the pulling position then it's grinding because the winch is already bottomed-out. Remember that in-order to use that winch, it's pulling power may be a function of engine RPM. "Part Time" four wheel drive is for loose/limited traction situations and NOT for dry/paved roads - if you use it in good traction conditions then the stresses can ruin drive-line components. "Full Time" four wheel drive is safe for use on paved roads and dirty back roads but is limited in it's ability to deliver "go" power to the ground on difficult terrain (mud, rocks, stumps, loose stuff, gravelly up-hill climbs).

Thanks cherryokee, I got my winch figured out...... I found a receipt from a machine shop in ann arbor Mi., it says that it was for a reconditioned 258 crankshaft and rods-$279 Child and albert? 60" pistons-$328 timing set trw-$78 clevite 77 kit. $105. Crane fireball-$216 edelebrok 3spring-$76. A.R.P-$132 machine service- 3angle- decking- bore- finish hone- comp assembly. $617. If someone can explain? I did a oil change today because it was kinda ticking at idle cold. Its the same afterward is this o.k. it goes away when it gets to 160 or so. Not noticeable when the hood is shut. I have put 2000mi. on it since I bought it. Maybe Ive been beating in it too much?

The valvetrain on these engines are noisy, nothing to worry about. If it's running strong and not overheating, leaking any fluids, or burning oil, just drive it and enjoy it.

If its that quiet I say you have a good one! I had a mj with a 4.0, I had a death rattle in the winter mornings that was heard from in the house. It was like that for over three years, needless to say I sold that one in the summer! I assume that everyone will agree with me on here that the 4.0 lets you know its running. Like busted back sez they have noisy lifters and such- Just keep driving the snot out of it!
