Red face new, loving my new old jeep, but it needs some work ...

new guy here. just got her a few days ago. love how different it is then my japanese turbo sedan.

anyway, ive been doin some research on the symptoms shes showing and i thought i'd finally register to get some formal help.

She stumbles, and idles a lil funny. Plugs are new, needs a new cap/rotor/plugs but everything else is fresh. disconnecting most of the sensors near the intake seems not to change anything strangely. very strong exhaust/gasoline smell everywhere.

also, the front makes a clicking/grinding noise. very noticeable. from what i read i guess it would be the ubolts. no idea how to do those lol

cant belive the distributor doesnt change the idle haha

anyway, any help greatly appreciated.

heres a pic:

it seems like you have a couple of different problems the noise is most lickly a uni bearing or u joint not u bolt. as for the engine replace the cap coil rotor wires and plugs then adjust your timing your timing in and see if that helps also look for leakes around the fule line. and the timing can be adjusted

Since you have an 86 it is either a 2.5L 4 cyl, or the huge POS 2.8LV6.. which one is it?

it is indeed the 2.5. and yes i misspoke i meant u joint.

i just replaced the cap/rotor/plugs and plug wires and still the same, stumbles and funny idle. also replaced some rubber hoses that were dry and cracked. misted starter fluid over the hoses but idle stayed the same.

can someone point me to timing adjustment? i cant find how to do it ...

She has 180k. I guess I need to look thru the technical forum to see how to check timing.

Any more info greatly appreciated.
