New Jeep with some quirks
Just looked at mine and there is plenty of room between the trans where the switch is and the exhaust pipe for a wrench or ratchet. Right off I can't remember what tools I used but I believe I could even get a 3/8 drive swivel head ratchet with an extension/extensions to work where your trying.
I just did the NSS on my 94 cherokee and it took me about 30 mins to remove and install another one. Wrenches work the best in removing the bolt on it and loosening up the larger nut. The harder part was cutting the wire ties. But I was able to grab the wire ties and slide them into a better place to cut. Also check out 1A auto for the nss. I used their free shipping and it came in the mail two days later. As far as cleaning goes its easily doable just be careful with the small parts. The only reason I didn't clean it is because it was cracked.
about once a month i get a check eng code that points to nss.
jeep runs/starts the same for months,no problems . im too lazy to mess with it!. excuse,,,too cold, still in thirties overnite.

When we tried to use the ratchet t would hit the floorplan and wouldn't go on the bolt all the way and kept slipping off. I was worried about rounding out the bolt.

For the head unit, consider using an Android tablet and running google's Android Auto app. Removable, built-in battery back up. If you use something like a Google Nexus 7 32gb (cheap), or Huawei Media Pad M3 (has a micro sd slot). Designed for a touch UI, more complete functionality across the board. Also removable and you can still use it as a tablet if you want.
You could then use a standalone 4-channel amplifier and add a Bluetooth module to stream music, or use an OTG USB DAC for better sound quality.
Hide it all either under the rear bench, or under the steering wheel (tons of room in that area). The Nexus 7 should fit in the glove box as well, or use magnets to make it removable.
Here is a pretty good example, I have no idea how he designed the volume control though (no steering wheel volume buttons on the XJ)
And the Android Auto UI (you need to sideload the .apk on tablets because Google is stupid, but you might as well update to 7.1 anyways)

Alright so for now I'm chocking the NSS up to a lost cause. I don't have the proper tools. And the driver's test in my state doesn't test for reverse lights and it doesn't seem to be affecting the Jeep much at all. I do have some check engine fault codes though. Anyone care to look at these? I know 3 of them are because of the NSS.

Agree with your statement. My point is that the NSS is what he is trying to remove. Is the NSS not on the drivers side? Beg pardon if I am mistaken but that bolt is not relevant to the NSS?

NSS is on passenger side of AW4 transmission, between cooler lines. Attached with the bolt in question.
