Default New headlights

Hi, Im a new cherokee owner, i bought a 96 cherokee off a friend, its in great shape, runs good. I am going to change the headlight boxes or brackets im not sure what there called, anyway the ones on there are really yellow, so i ordered them yesterday, now i was also thinking of putting halogen lights, now my question is, can i just put the halogen bulbs in or do i need to put in a transformer first?
And also can the halogen bulbs go into the regular headlamp box or do i need a special type. I as really just thinking of buying the halogens at autozone.
Thank's Erik.

Is this a Grand Cherokee, or an XJ bodied Cherokee? The XJ just uses a sealed beam lamp, where as the Grand Cherokee (ZJ) uses a replaceable bulb in a headlamp housing. If you have an XJ with dim yellow headlamps start looking at the headlamp grounds. If you have a ZJ with hazed up headlamp lenses, you can find new housings at www.rockauto.com for less than 50 bucks.

You already have halogen bulbs, but all you do to replace them is unscrew the retainer at the back of the headlamp housing and pull the bulb out. Do not touch the new bulb's glass portion with your hands, it will cause them to blow prematurely.
