Default New Guy Transfer Case Help

I am new to the XJ family. I just got my Cherokee inspected and running good. I have noticed that when I shift then apply the gas there is a clunk noise coming from under the driver seat. I have look at some thread here and with the help of a transmission shop. I know I need a new transfer case. My question is does it have to be the same year and from the same transmission to the rear end type or can it be just the same model?

Specs are 2.5L, Manual Ax-5 pretty sure, NP 231, 8.25, front DS I think is D30, Also I read about a 231J I don't know about the J, what does it mean?

Any help would be great I have lots of free time this week due to a Temp. Layoff, so I want to fix it this week if I can.

as long as you get a NP231 out of an xj you should be fine if you go to a junk yard to get just ask they will be able to point you in the right direction

Thanks I did not know if it had to be from another manual transmission or not. Also is there anyway to tell if it is in good shape or not?

Mount is brand new, I replace it and check the bolts to make sure they are tight. U joints are good, but could be replaced. Any special tools to replace them?

Thanks looks easy enough. I am pretty sure that I need to replace the transfer case it makes an awful noise when I put it in any gear and out of gear there is a clunk noise after I shift and apply the gas. Also I took to cottman transmission(Free) to help find the noise and they told it was the transfer case. They wanted to charge 200 buck just to take it out and check it, I told them no way I can get a used one for less. My only problem is I am trying to figure out if any 231 will work or does need to be from the same drive line that I have.

the input splines are different and I don't know what years and tranny types are interchangeable

but if that part is still good on your old TC you can swap it out
that requires taking the TC apart it not that hard but I would avoid it if possible
