My rotors were badly grooved, were that way when I bought the xj almost two years ago.

When I bought my XJ someone had turned the LF rotor well below the min. thickness the damn thing was almost paper thin. I replaced everything new in the front and rear brakes including new drums they were crap as well.
I do use the hawk pads on the front and on the rear a shoe that has excellent braking without counting on them being long wearing. I have did this for over 17 yrs. on my non DD's. The shoes are cheap and last as long as the pads do and that is what I'm after, it's all about the braking without the fading and the front disc's do most of the work anyway.

I've run them with rivet grooves in my younger years, they just wear in and seem to work fine.
